Broncos Sign Brandon Johnson as Insurance for AFC Championship
The Denver Broncos have made a move to bolster their wide receiver depth ahead of the AFC Championship Game by signing former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Brandon Johnson to their practice squad.
According to Mike Klis of 9News, Johnson’s addition comes as the Broncos face injury concerns at the wide receiver position. The team is dealing with injuries to key players like Marvin Mims, Troy Franklin, and Pat Bryant, who were all hurt during the divisional-round victory over the Buffalo Bills.
Brandon Johnson’s Familiarity with the Broncos
Johnson, who played for the Broncos in the 2022 and 2023 seasons, is well-acquainted with head coach Sean Payton’s offense. During his time in Denver, he appeared in 20 games (three starts), recording 25 receptions for 326 yards and five touchdowns.
His most productive season came in 2023, when he posted 19 catches for 284 yards and four touchdowns under Payton’s guidance. Johnson’s knowledge of the system makes him an ideal insurance option for the Broncos as they prepare for their clash with the New England Patriots.
Injury Concerns for Broncos’ Wide Receivers
The Broncos’ wide receiver corps has been hit hard by injuries in recent weeks. Marvin Mims was able to finish the game against Buffalo and is expected to be available for the AFC Championship. However, Troy Franklin sustained a hamstring injury and Pat Bryant suffered his second concussion in less than a month, leaving their statuses for Sunday’s game uncertain.
If Franklin and Bryant are unable to play, the Broncos will be left with only three healthy wide receivers on their active roster: Mims, Courtland Sutton, and Lil’Jordan Humphrey.
